Canon has chips on the ink tanks for the pixma 970 which is supposed to make sure your using Canon carts...fine.
Problem is it doesn't work - the OEM carts I have (the ones which came inside the printer box) regularly and intermittently generate "ink tank can not be recognized errors". Now the yellow tank (60% full by the way) is generating that error AND IT WILL NOT GO AWAY.
Result - You can't print with that expensive printer you just purchased.
CANON is NOT FIXING THIS ISSUE. They won't update firmware or drivers. Apparently they'll mail you another tank if you complain a lot..(tick tock - how quickly did you need to print your taxes, resume, etc.???)
This isn't a one-off situation, there's a lot of this problem reported across the web now. So much for being an early adopter..

5 of 5 Excellent Value Thursday, March 20, 2008 Mike from Fenton
If you are looking for a high quality all in one photo printer this is the printer you should considered. I purchased this printer based on PC Magazine's ratings of the Canon MP970, PC Magazine gave the MP970 the covetted Editors Choice rating. (Check it out on their web site).
Scanning, text printing, copying and most importantly photo printing is excellent.
I scan old photos and use photoshop elements 6 to fix image, outstanding results.
Photo print quality is excellent, almost as good as the high end photo printers that cost over $750. The 8.5" X 11" photo's produced by this printer blew me away, unbelievable.
Has two paper trays which I find to be very helpful.
Set-up was easy. Have not hooked up to network. Was this review helpful?

Easy to use, excellent at scanning color negatives and slides, more than reasonable price for what you get. I've had this AIO for three months, and have had absolutely no glitches. Easy installation, and longevity of cartridges also seems quite good. Highly recommended! Was this review helpful?

Bought this to replace a less than one year-old HP 3310 (horrible experience--constantly malfunctioning bloatware!!!, quickly broken hinge, broken network print/scan) and COULDN'T BE HAPPIER. Canon drivers were easy and quick to install, full functionality across network from multiple XP and Vista computers, high quality output, easy to use front panel, bells and whistles too (pictbridge, media slots). Only thing missing is fax, but I only need fax very occasionally so it is not a deal breaker. Would buy again. No plans to go back to HP, ever. Was this review helpful?

4 of 5 Met expectations Friday, December 07, 2007 Robert from Pittsburgh, PA
The driver installation was not well thought out. Updated drivers from the website were not complete. You needed to install from the CDROM then update some driver components. I typically install drivers from the web and skip the update step. This seemed impossible with this printer. However once the drivers were installed, printing and scanning over the network seemed pretty intuitive.
I'm not a good authority on print quality, but it seemed very good.
I would recommend this product and would probably purchase it again. Was this review helpful?
5 of 5 High quality images in no time! Thursday, November 29, 2007 Happy Customer from Florida
When printing black and white, this printer speeds through all of the jobs and provides high quality images every time. Photographs print wonderfully. The ability to print right from negatives is wonderful and photos come out exactly as they would from a photo developer. The free photo processing and editing software is comparable to other online photo processing websites. The screen has a wonderful resolution and although it warns you not to use thicker card stock in the feeder, I have not had a problem yet. It also prints well on vellum that is designed for laser printers. The only thing this printer is missing is an automatic document feeder and a fax, but the photo quality is a comparable trade-off. 5 of 5 Top of the line of the new Canon Printers Tuesday, October 02, 2007 A Customer from North East Ohio
I always owned HP printers (except for 1 Epson). The last generation Canon printers (MP810, MP960 etc.) always got great reviews on print quality/speed, but no networking. I was NOT happy with the HP printers of the same generation because of the reviews (mediocre print quality). I still favored HP because they have been good printers for me. I wanted to network my printer on my home network (3 wired PC's, 2 wireless laptops). I had my HP printer shared, but one PC has to remain on for the others to print. I was waiting for new models to come out. Finally they are here from HP, Canon, and Lexmark etc. I first looked at the new HP printers and seen the same small expensive ink tanks and nothing looked better except for wireless. I even looked at Lexmarks new line. I wanted something nicer. Then, I saw the Canon MP970. Outstanding print/scanner spec's, 35mm film and slide scanning, Pict Bridge, etc.
I bought one and have been using it. I have it networked to all PC's and it could not have been easier. I put in the CDROM followed the on screen instructions. Installation went without a hitch. I have printed/scanned from my wired/wireless PC's. Everything works fast and reliable. The quality of text seems laser quality and the photo's look lab quality. This is my first Canon printer and I am very happy with it.
